When Gov. Tim Walz launches his campaign for a third term, he’ll enter the race with every advantage — a boatload of cash, the power of incumbency and the drive to steady Minnesota through yet another year of tumult.

Gov. Tim Walz spoke with reporters on Wednesday at an Inver Grove Heights elementary school and talked about the possibility of running for re-election in 2026. He said an official announcement will come in the next few days.

At a news conference prior to the quarterly convening of commissioners for the Children’s Cabinet, Governor Tim Walz implied he is leaning toward running for re-election.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Wednesday offered his strongest signal yet that he plans to run for a third term. During a news conference outside Pine Bend Elementary School in Inver Grove Heights, he told reporters to expect an official announcement on his decision in the “next few days.”

Last week, Governor Tim Walz confirmed that he’d been calling members of the legislature about plans for a special session on guns. While there hasn’t been much news on the front since Tuesday, most lawmakers still expect him to call one by mid-September.
