Universal closed out its CinemaCon with an emotional first look at Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good, with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande onstage.

Gregory Maguire says publishing a “Wicked” prequel on the heels of the wildly successful movie adaptation may seem like “leaping after low hanging fruit,” but it’s a story he’s been waiting to tell for 30 years.

Elphaba is green in Wicked because her biological parents drink a “green elixir” while pregnant with her. In fact, they state this quite clearly in the first song after the overture, “No One Mourns the Wicked.” Open your ears, people!

Schwartz confirmed to THR that there are two new songs in Wicked: For Good. “They were written because they were necessary for the storytelling. It’s why there isn’t a new song in the first movie because we didn’t need one,” he said. “They’re an important part of the story.”

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande joked that they will display "less waterworks" when they promote Wicked: For Good this fall. The pair presented new footage from the sequel to 2024's Wicked at CinemaCon in Las Vegas alongside director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt, months before it releases in theaters Nov. 21.
