U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta will start to strip Google of its monopoly power after previously finding distribution deals with companies that make Google the default search engine on

A federal judge on Friday gave the U.S. Justice Department until the end of the year to outline how Google should be punished for illegally monopolizing the internet search market and then prepare to present its case for imposing the penalties next spring.

Federal Judge Amit P. Mehta sets courtroom schedule for the remedy phase of the Justice Department’s landmark case against the internet giant, having ruled last month that it illegally acts as a monopoly in internet search.

The federal judge who recently found that Google illegally monopolized the search market said he wants to deliver a decision on remedies by August.

Though the prosecutor did not provide specifics of the proposed remedy, Justice Department attorney David Dahlquist state it should be comprehensive and consider how Google plans to incorporate artificial intelligence into search,

The US Department of Justice aims to present a detailed outline by December on the measures Alphabet's Google must adopt to restore competition, following a court ruling that found the tech giant had unlawfully monopolised the online search market.
