Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson won the 2024-25 Calder Trophy on Tuesday as the NHL’s rookie of the year. Hutson led rookies in scoring with six goals and 60 assists in his inaugural NHL season as the Canadiens made a surprise return to the playoffs this season.

It’s because his parents not only threw a surprise party to celebrate the Montreal Canadiens defenseman being a finalist for the Calder Trophy, which goes to the NHL rookie of the year, but also because at the surprise party the 21-year-old found out he was the winner.

Hutson has used information to overcome challenges and improve his whole life, and there's no reason to believe that will stop now.
