Once empowered by the regime, many Alawites now face reprisals from rebel factions and displaced Sunni populations who suffered under Assad's rule.

Syria's transitional government on Friday launched a sweeping operation in western coastal areas against fighters loyal to the deposed Assad regime. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights later said that 162 Alawite civilians were "executed" by security forces.
