Warner Bros.’ kid-friendly movie blew past all expectations to score the top start ever for a video game adaptation, with final numbers coming in more than $12 million ahead of Sunday's already historic estimates.

"A Minecraft Movie" is a smash hit at the box office, and it has set a new record for video game adaptations on the big screen.

This past weekend, following a Q1 when the industry fretted that moviegoers forgot about going to the movies, Warner Bros. and Legendary revived the global and domestic box office with the Jared Hess directed A Minecraft Movie with a $163M U.S./Canada opening, $150.7M abroad and $313.7M worldwide.

Weekend ticket sales totaled $163 million, Warner Bros. said, more than double the expected amount, ending a Hollywood dry spell.
